Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you book

Booking

The booking process at 4Drive Indonesia is designed to be straightforward. You select your vehicle, dates, and pickup location online, then confirm your reservation with an advance payment. Most questions at this stage relate to vehicle availability, selection, and the confirmation process.

How do I book a vehicle with 4Drive Indonesia?

Search for your dates and pickup location on our homepage, compare available vehicles, and select the one that suits your needs. Complete the booking form with your details, then pay the advance online by card. You will receive a confirmation email with your voucher immediately.

Do I get a confirmation after booking?

Yes. Once your advance payment is processed, we send a booking voucher to your email. The voucher contains pickup instructions, the local rental company contact details, and the remaining balance due at pickup. Save this document on your phone or print it for collection.

Can I book a specific vehicle model?

You book a specific vehicle shown on the website - for example, a Toyota Avanza or a Suzuki Jimny. The exact unit and its registration details are confirmed by the local rental company closer to your pickup date. The model, transmission type, and features match what you selected online.

Payment and Advance

Payment is split into two parts. You pay an advance online when you book, and the remaining balance when you collect the vehicle. The advance secures your reservation, and the payment method for the balance depends on the specific vehicle you have chosen.

What payment methods do you accept for the advance?

The booking advance is paid online by card - debit or credit. We do not accept cash payments online. The advance is processed immediately and confirms your reservation. For more information, see our payment methods page.

How much do I pay online and how much at pickup?

You pay a booking advance online when you reserve. The exact amount is shown during checkout. The remaining balance is due when you collect the vehicle. The total amount and breakdown are displayed before you confirm your booking.

How can I pay the remaining balance at pickup?

The acceptable payment methods for the balance vary by vehicle. Most accept cash or debit card, while some require a credit card. The specific options are listed during booking and in your voucher. Check these details before you travel to ensure you have the correct payment method available.

Deposit and Credit Card

A deposit is a temporary hold placed on your card by the local rental company at pickup. This is separate from the rental payment. The hold amount and card requirements depend on the specific vehicle, and the deposit is released after you return the vehicle undamaged.

What if I do not have a credit card?

Some vehicles are available with no deposit requirement, meaning no card hold is placed. For vehicles that do require a deposit, a debit card may be accepted, but you should ensure your card has a sufficient limit to cover the hold. Requirements are listed for each vehicle during booking.

Why do some vehicles require a deposit and others do not?

Deposit requirements are set by the local rental company and depend on the specific vehicle. Vehicles with no deposit requirement are clearly marked. A deposit is a security hold for potential damage or fines - it is not linked to insurance coverage or the excess amount, which remain separate.

When will the deposit be released?

If a deposit is required, it is held on your card during the rental period. Once you return the vehicle without damage or outstanding fines, the local company releases the hold. Depending on your bank, it may take a few business days for the funds to reappear in your account.

Documents and Age

To drive in Indonesia, you need both your home driving licence and an International Driving Permit. The age requirement and driving experience vary by vehicle type, and you will sign the rental agreement with the local company at pickup.

What documents do I need to pick up the vehicle?

You must present your home driving licence, a valid International Driving Permit, and the passport used for booking. The rental agreement is signed at the pickup location. Some companies also require proof of onward travel or accommodation details.

What is the minimum age to drive?

Most vehicles require the driver to be at least 21 years old with one year of driving experience. Larger or higher-value vehicles may require a minimum age of 23 or 25. The specific age and experience requirements are shown during booking for each vehicle.

Can I add a second driver?

Yes. Additional drivers can be registered at pickup for a fee charged by the local rental company. The second driver must meet the same age, licence, and document requirements as the main driver and be present at the pickup location to sign the agreement.

Pickup and Return

Pickup arrangements differ depending on the local rental company and your chosen location. Some provide a counter at the airport or town centre, while others offer delivery to your hotel. Return procedures follow the same principle, and all details are in your voucher.

Where do I collect the vehicle?

Pickup location depends on the company providing your vehicle. Some have desks at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), others operate from an office in Denpasar or deliver to hotels in Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, or Nusa Dua. The exact address and instructions are in your voucher.

Can I choose a different pickup and return location?

One-way rentals within Bali may be possible depending on the vehicle and company. Enter your preferred pickup and return locations during the search to see available options. Cross-border travel is not permitted - Bali is an island.

What happens during the vehicle inspection?

At pickup, you and the rental company representative inspect the vehicle together. Any existing scratches, dents, or damage are documented in the rental agreement. Take photos of the vehicle before you drive away. At return, the same inspection is repeated to confirm no new damage has occurred.

Driving in Indonesia

Indonesia follows left-hand traffic. Roads in Bali range from smooth highways to narrow village lanes crowded with scooters. Urban speed limits are 40-50 km/h, rural roads 60-80 km/h. There are no toll roads or vignettes on the island, and fuel is widely available from Pertamina, Shell, and Total stations.

What are the main driving challenges in Bali?

Heavy scooter traffic, narrow roads in villages, and congestion around Denpasar, Seminyak, and Canggu are common. Seasonal rain from October to March can cause flooding on low-lying roads. Drive defensively, allow extra time for journeys, and avoid rural routes after dark if unfamiliar with the area.

Can I take the vehicle on a ferry to Nusa Penida or Java?

Ferry tickets and permissions must be arranged separately with the rental company. Not all companies allow their vehicles on ferries, and additional insurance or fees may apply. Confirm this at pickup if you plan to visit Nusa Penida or travel to Java.

What do I do if the vehicle breaks down or I have an accident?

Contact the local rental company immediately using the phone number in your voucher. They will arrange roadside assistance or a replacement vehicle. In case of an accident, obtain a police report and do not leave the scene until cleared to do so. Document everything with photos.

Changes and Cancellation

Plans can shift, especially when travelling. Cancellation and modification policies depend on how far in advance you notify us and the specific terms of your booking. Review the terms during checkout, and contact us early if your dates or requirements change.

Can I modify my booking after confirmation?

Changes to dates, pickup location, or vehicle type may be possible depending on availability. Contact us at [email protected] with your booking reference as soon as possible. Modifications are subject to availability and may involve fare differences or adjustment fees.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms are displayed during booking and included in your confirmation email. Generally, cancellations made well in advance allow for partial refunds, while late cancellations closer to the pickup date may result in reduced or no refund. Review the specific terms for your reservation before confirming.
